My Town
My QTH is called San Maurizio Canavese, situated about 15 miles North of Torino city, wich is capital of our region called Piemonte located in North/West part of Italy, wich bordering to west with France, to North with Switzerland, to East with Lombardia Region, to South with Liguria Region, San Maurizio is a small and quite town, we have 7000 inhabitants here, origin of the name comes from and in honour of San Maurizio martyr, here down follow what the story says :
In A.D. 288, the third Roman legion named Tebea and composed by a great number of Christians, had the duty of repressing the rising of Bagaudian peasants lead by Armando and Eliano.
As the rebels' s land was situated by the swiss lake Leman, they had to pass trough our region to reach the Salassi's land and from there the Pennine Alps down to Octodurum (Martigny) by the Rhone river, as the legionaires arrived in Agauno, the St. Maurice of today, they started making proselitism, for this reason the pretorian prefect, Pitius Varus, put them under accusation and afterwards Massimiano ordered to kill most zealous preachers among the legionaires.
Most militiamen took to the bush, as they did not want to sacrifice to the idols, the historical tradition, that some scholars believe to be injustified, reports that also the legionaire "primicerius" Maurizio was slaughtered, this warrior, as well as his companions Esuperio,Candido and Vittore was afterwards honoured and venerated. At the end of the last century, the abbot Bernard of Montmelian, canon of St. Maurice, made and accurate research on ancient manuscripts and finally concluded that the episode was authentical and dateable between A.D. 287 and 302 A.D., a letter written by St. Euchrius, bishop of Lyon, and dated about A.D. 449, confirm the massacre and clearly mentions the names of four martyrs.
Again according to the tradition, only three legionaires escaped the slaughter : Avventore, Solutore and Ottavio; they reached Turin, where they started preching Christianity, and finally put to death for it.
The basilique-abbey, built by King Sigismondo in A.D. 511, on the site of Maurizio's martyrdom, is one of the most ancient abbey of all Christianity, and it keeps a very rich treasure of shrines and gifts tat potent man offered to the "saints-warrior" through the centuries.
The House of Savoia, at the time of the relic's transfer from St. Maurice to Turin, gave the Saint's thigh-bone to our village: nowadays, the relic is still exposed on the altar of the village parish church during the patronal festival and on the transfer's anniversary (San Morissi da invern), on 15th January.
Photography
I became interested in Photography in 1960, my first camera was very simple, gift from my parents, some year later I bougth my first real 35 mm. camera the Minolta SRT 101 equipped with 28 mm. wide angle, and 135 mm. telephoto lens, I made thousands of pictures with black and white, color negative films and also color positive Slides, during my summer vacations around Italy and Europe, BW negative films where developed and printed by myself, late in 1981, I bougth a new camera Minolta X-700 with Zoom lens Tamron 28/135 mm, in 1994 I changed my camera system and bougth a new Nikon F-70 equipped with two Nikon zoom lenses
28/70 mm. and 70/200 mm., in 1999 I became interested in digital Photo cameras, I bougth a Nikon Coolpix 950, I'm very fascinated by this new system, for it's easy way of taking pictures, at a cost of nothing, and now we have really on the market super high resolution cameras, just we can compare results to old traditional systems without problems, now I own a Minolta Dimage 7, five megapixel high resolution equipped with IBM 1-gigabyte H.D. ;spring 2004 i bought the new digital camera Nikon D70 with 6.1 megapixel resolution, equipped with zoom Nikkor AF.S DX 18-70 mm. and zoom Nikkor AF-D 70-210, my first real reflex digi camera, I been very impressed about this camera, it's fantastic, recently i bougth a new camera the new born in Nikon House, the new Nikon D300 equipped with the zoom Nikkor AF-S 18 - 200 f. 3,5 - 5,6 with incorporated the antishake VR system, after a shorth test time I must say the the Nikon's Tecnicians have made an excellent job, it's very impressive using this camera,
I really enjoy taking pictures and by means of my computer print them, share them, correct them; now also I traslate all my older positive and negative 35 mm films by means of dedicated scanner Nikon LS 2000 in order to have all my shots records in digital format, here down link to the Web Photo Gallery where you will see lot of pictures taken by me over the years during my trips and vacations around Italy and Europe area, I hope you will enjoy the visit, many thanks.
Reef Aquarium
I became interested in reefkeeping in 1975 after a ten year experience in freeshwater, my present tank is a120 gallon reef style set up in 1997, plus 25 gallon sump, fiber floss prefilter, wet/dry trickle filter, Pro-Twin venturi protein skimmer, two Rio 3500/900 gallon/h for filter water circulation, working alternatively 6h each, plus two 400 gallon/h power head for extra water circulation, canopy contains two 150 watts 10000° Kelvin metal halide lamp ( 8h. photoperiod a day ) plus two 36 w. lamps one attinic and one blue (12h. photoperiod a day ) temperature (heating and cooling) is controlled by an electronic configurable controller, wich pilots a classic bayonet glass heater and a fan just positioned over the surface area working as cooler, I find this system very efficient, due to the incremented water evaporation temperature decreases about 4,5 degrees Fahrenheit this is not too bad considering the inexpensive cost of the system, PH control is done by an Hanna probe mod.981411, water level is kept by an electrified top-off system, water is feed by a reverse osmosis filter through a Kalkwasser dispenser for all evaporation make-up water, it completes the system an automated daily dose programmed water change which work this way : pressing at the start button cycle starts, airy salt water arrives by pump from the salt water reserve to the tank a preset time, then at an other preset time, tank pump circulation stops, water by tank overflow goes down into the sumps, level increases reaching a sump overflow and from here goes into an house drainage,after then the time expires, cycle finishes and pump starts again, the entire process needs 20 minutes, I make water changes every day in a small dose of 0,6 gallon (18 gallons a month ), anyway I can also preset the system to make daily water changes also in my absence; the plan, circuit diagram, filter, kalkwasser dispenser, canopy stand included is DIY, last expedient I did this winter is a gadget planned to save money from the bill of our utility company, it consist in the regeneration of thermal energy produced by linghthing lamps, conveying warm air (that comes out of the canopy due to forced air circulation by a fan inside it) over the tank surface by an insulating form patch panel, ( during winter I use to cover the tank with glass ) this simplifies the job, worm air comes out of the other side of the tank by very small glass opening, the system works very well, in fact during lamps photoperiod according to test done temperature of the tank remains the same without the help of the bayonet glass heater.
Maintenance...
Maintenance consist of series of operations to do in the passing of time, my daily operations are :
general control of the tank, feed inhabitants, temperature, ph, replace prefilter fiber floss media, start a cycle of water change, and every two--four days empty and cleaning skimmer cup, cleaning tank glass, check salinity, once a week feed the invertebrate, add small doses of Sera Marinvit-plus Strontium-Complex, once a month replace Calcium Hydrate, I add small doses of Sodium Carbonate and replace in second chamber filter fiber floss media, and every two--three month cleaning detritus built up undergravel and replace dose of granular activated carbon in the sump.
Water parameter...
water parameter in my tank as follow:
Temperature kept at 78 degrees Fahrenheit
Specific gravity = 1.024
PH = 8,2 to 8,4
Calcium = 450 ppm
Alkalinity = 8 to 10 dKH
Nitrate = 0
Phosphate = 0,1
Feeding inhabitants...
Fish once a day with Sera Granumarin and Sera freeze dried Krill, and every two/three days with frozen
Krill and fresh salade, invertebrates once a week with Sera Coraliquid.
Fossils
Together my brother Ezio between 1960/1980 I was interested in the world of f ossils, I'm still interested now but i'm not anymore an active collector, I have a very nice collection, most of the pieces where found by ourselves in the many deposits our region offers, specially of that age called "Astiano", much present in the Asti area, Langhe and Monferrato, i will in the future take some photos of the best pieces of my collection and i will publish as Photo Show.
